There are certain American Made items that can be more difficult to shop for than others. American Made winter coats are one of those categories that can be especially troublesome to purchase.
But, our absolute favorite coat of the season is Rachel Comey's Persimmon Winter Coat. We searched the internet for the coat and were surprised to find that Nordstrom's was carrying the coat. They actually have a 'Made in the USA' search tool on their website and we found a fair number of good winter coat options that are American Made.
On the Nordstrom's website, they make a blanket statement when referring to their 'made in the USA' winter coat collection. Instead of clarifying at times that the fabric may be imported, and the item technically 'assembled in the USA', they simply state 'Made in the USA' which can cause some confusion. Only when materials are sourced at least 50% from the United States is appropriate to state, 'Made in USA'.
Interestingly, we had previously visited Rachel Comey's website and the persimmon coat was described on the Rachel Comey website as being from a United States Wool Manufacturing Company, therefore making it sourced and made in the United States.
We still have a long way to go on our coat list, but we are pretty happy with the below list as a start! We thought of a few different 'coat categories' and couldn't believe that we actually found an American Made option for each category! Please let us know if you have another category to add, or if you know of any other Made in America coats or brands to add to our list!
Long Black Winter Coat - A long black winter coat will your soundest investment. If you don't have one already, buy the highest quality black coat that you can afford. Make sure that it is not trendy because you should be able to keep this coat for years and years! My very first apparel purchase in NYC was a black Mackage coat, FOURTEEN years ago. I still like the coat and it has held up, although I have needed to stitch the inside of the pockets.
I really love this black Fleurette winter coat. It's simple, and the inverted collar gives the coat just a bit of style, but not any undue trendiness. I could see wearing this coat for years and years without getting tired of it. Assembled in the USA, using Italian fabrics.

Because the winter black coat is so very important, we are including another American Made option. This is a stylish winter coat with a high collar and pleated front. Rachel Comey describes this fantastic coat as a cocoon, which suits it remarkably. The coat buttons at top and then flows openly, giving it soft gently falling lines.

Camel Coat - If you already have a black winter coat, or if you specifically do not want to purchase a black winter coat, we recommend that your next purchase is a winter coat in camel or grey. Like black, camel and grey go with everything and you can wear these colors from Fall through Spring. We are still on the hunt for Made in America grey winter coats to add to our list, but we do have two wonderful camel coat options.
The first is a winter coat in camel by Fleurette. This is a long coat assembled in the USA using Italian materials. The front of the coat is quite sleek, with no buttons or zippers showing. We love the small collar, which can be worn up, as shown, or folded down.

The second camel winter coat option below, is from Rag and Bone. This is a very feminine coat with a pinched waist, single button in front and long collar. This coat is assembled in America using imported fabrics. This coat works equally well as a casual coat over a t-shirt and jeans or buttoned up over a work suit.

Pop of Color - If you already have your staple coats, or you simply find them much too boring, how about going with a pop of color? Our absolute favorite coat of the season fits this description and is a Rachel Comey winter coat in persimmon! This coat doesn't have much of a collar, has wide arms and a straight fit, making it a very stylish choice. This is a very beautiful coat, but if you tire easily of color, buyer beware. As we mentioned earlier, Nordstrom's mentioned that this coat used imported fabrics, but Rachel Comey says it uses fabric from a US mill. Jury is out on this one, but either way, it is assembled in the USA.

Puffer - Do you ski or snowboard? Do you enjoy a good 'ole snowball fight? Do you go outside during the coldest days of winter? Everyone who is lucky owns a puffy coat. If you're extra extra lucky, you own a puffy coat, made in America in bright apple red. This coat is designed by Rachel Comey and also comes in blue! How to look cool when it's freezing out. How to feel good about buying American made.

In case you were wondering if you really needed to get prepared, the Farmer's Almanac has predicted a 'colder than usual winter' for Winter of 2017. Help! I'm thinking of leaving NYC for somewhere warm in 10 years....so at my current winter coat rate, that should mean that I only need to buy one more! What do you think it should be?!
I've really had my heart set on a grey coat. If anyone knows of a grey winter coat, that is American Made....do include the link below. Otherwise, it'll just be another year wearing the same old black winter coat ;D Pretty soon, we'll be able to call it a vintage!
We want to hear what stores you support that are supporting local and made in US brands. Shoot us a note, DM us, tag us on Instagram. We'd love to know. In the meantime, stay warm friends!
